My dissertation
looks at immigrant identity in a comparative legal context with specific
attention to citizenship status and attitudes toward naturalization. I am
comparing 2nd generation of Turkish immigrants in Germany (Berlin)
and the U.S. (NYC, NJ). I am interested in issues such as 'loyalty' and
'belonging' in the context of naturalization and permanent residence from the
perspective of the immigrant as well as the legal framework of the host
country. My data comes from face-to-face interviews, archival research, media
coverage and extensive observation in the field. I taught various undergraduate
courses as part of my assistantship in the sociology department. Nowadays I
teach faculty development workshops in assisting instructors to integrate
technology into their curriculum. Also, as part of my research and development
assistantship with ASU's Information Technology, Instruction Support Research
group, I work with a team to study online learning at ASU through survey data
collection.
